Types of Foosball Tables

Foosball, also called table soccer, is a popular pastime and competitive game in several countries. Many types of foosball tables are available, each with different qualities and features. Selecting the right foosball table is important, because the unique qualities of the table type will have a significant influence on your playing style.

French-style

French-style foosball tables often have telescoping rods that do not protrude through the other side of the table; this prevents injury and is space-efficient. The lightweight rods allow for easy handling and play. The strong and durable metal figurines are often individually hand-painted. French-style tables are known for their high degree of ball control: this allows the ball to be held, passed and shuffled under the players' feet. This enhanced ball control allows for a more imaginative game, as players must develop a style based on good ball control, passing skills and accuracy. French-style foosballs are made of cork, which is ideal for beginners, as the ball is not so slick as to be un-pinnable.

American-style

Noted for their durability, American-style foosball tables are generally made of woods like mahogany and laminated plywood. American-style tables use player figurines with square-sided "feet" that allow more accurate ball control. The table's design does not allow the ball to pass between a player and the wall. American-style tables are unlike others because they have three goalies, one in the center and one in each corner, ensuring that the ball does not get stuck. American tables usually have perfectly symmetrical balls, wood handles and hollow, lightweight rods that allow smooth playing and faster responses. These tables have a cabinet design, allowing them to be shipped partially assembled.

Italian-style

Italian-style foosball tables have space-efficient telescopic rods. Italian tables's playing fields are made of either plastic laminate or smooth or sandblasted glass. Sandblasted surfaces add traction to the playing surface; smooth glass makes for a faster game; and plastic laminate allows more ball control. Features of Italian-style tables include rubber handles and height-adjustable steel or iron legs. Tables are usually made from multi-layer plywood and fibreboard. Italian foosball tables use roller bearings in the rods; this provides a longer life and a smoother action.
