DIY Pedestal Cake Stands

DIY Pedestal Cake Stands

Pedestal cake stands are a versatile and useful bake ware product. They are not only a serving surface but also a visual display that allows you to show off a classic cake or coffeecake. Originally made from Austrian crystal, the pedestal cake stand has evolved into many intricate variations. While the pedestal cake stands of the 50s and 60s were tinplate, most recent variations have been made of clear acrylic or Plexiglas. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

    1

Measure and mark a spot on a length of string at 6 inches and at 3 inches. Tie a loop in the end of the string and slide a permanent marker through the loop.

    2

Place a two-foot square piece of Plexiglas sheet on a work surface. Mark a spot in the approximate center of the sheet with the marker. Hold the string at the 6-inch mark, place it at the center mark on the Plexiglas sheet and use it as a compass to draw a 12-inch diameter circle. Repeat the process with a different measurement at a different location on the Plexiglas sheet. For the second one, hold the string at the 3-inch spot to draw a 6-inch diameter circle.

    3

Use a jigsaw to cut out the two discs of Plexiglas. Use sandpaper to clean up the edges of the two discs.

    4

Use a T-square to mark the center point of both Plexiglas discs.

    5

Use a power drill to make a 1-inch hole in the center of the smaller, 6-inch diameter disc.

    6

Measure, mark and use the hacksaw to cut a 5-inch piece of 1-inch Plexiglas acrylic tubing. Use sandpaper to smooth the cut end.

    7

Insert the 1-inch Plexiglas acrylic tubing into the 1-inch hole in the 6-inch Plexiglas disc to ensure a successful fit. If the fit is too tight, use sandpaper to shim down the tip. If the fit is too lose, it is okay. Wet the inside of the 1-inch hole in the 6-inch Plexiglas disc with an acrylic adhesive. Insert the 5-inch piece of Plexiglas acrylic tubing into the hole in the 6-inch Plexiglas disc.

    8

Place the 6-inch disc of Plexiglas right side up on a work surface. Put a liberal amount of the acrylic adhesive on the open end of the 5-inch piece of Plexiglas acrylic tubing. Carefully place the 12-inch Plexiglas acrylic disc onto the open end of the 5-inch piece of Plexiglas acrylic tubing, with the permanently marked center point on the upper surface of the disc. Place a book on the 12-inch disc to weight it down during drying. Cure the adhesive weld for 24 hours.
