How to Make an End Table From a Tree Trunk

How to Make an End Table From a Tree Trunk

Natural wood is an ideal way to add a rugged, interesting look to a range of home decorating schemes. You can use a tree trunk to make a variety of furniture, including coffee tables, end tables, chairs, stools or any other furniture made out of wood. End tables are especially easy to make because of the size and shape of the tables.

Instructions

    1

Allow the wood to season. Seasoned wood is wood that has been cut away from the tree long enough that the wood has dried and the moisture is down to lower levels. Usually it should be seasoned within a year or so of being cut. The wood needs to be dry and free of moisture to ensure good stability. The type of wood will determine whether the bark stays on the tree or not; most woods will lose their bark as they season.

    2

Spray and kill any insects with pesticides. Insects such as termites, ants, spiders or other harmful pests can be hiding in the wood. All insects should be dead before bringing the wood trunk into your home to avoid infestations.

    3

Cut the tree trunk to an appropriate size using a handsaw or a chainsaw. Cut it so that the top and bottom are both as straight and even as possible. The exact measurements will vary based on your other furniture and which height you think would be appropriate. Usually, the end table should be large enough to reach from a couch. A good approximate height to start at should be around 2 feet tall or so.

    4

Sand the top of the trunk until it is completely smooth with sandpaper or a sander. Sand in the same direction as the grain of the wood in a back-and-forth motion. Check the wood to be sure it is smooth before moving on. If it isn't smooth, continue to sand until it is.

    5

Coat the bottom of the end table with a polyurethane finish. Allow this to dry before applying a new coat. Apply at least two coats of polyurethane, though you can add more if you prefer. It should take a day to two days to completely finish the bottom.

    6

Coat the top and sides of the table with polyurethane. Like the bottom, you should use at least two coats.

    7

Allow the polyurethane to dry. It can take a few days, depending on the number of coats.
