Buying Tips for Foosball Tables

Foosball is another name for table soccer. The foosball table can have 11 or 13 players per team depending on whether there are three men on the rod with the goalie or just one goalie. The difference is personal preference. When deciding on a foosball table, consider the player types, how durably the table is constructed and the composition of the rods.

Player Shape and Weight

A properly formed player can help make more precise passes and shots. You should look for players that have straight-edged bottoms with dimples for the greatest level of control. If you are a beginner, these features will have minimal effect, so if you are just playing as a hobby it may not be worth the extra cost. Also, pay attention to whether the players are counterbalanced or not. If they are counterbalanced they will be able to stay in a horizontal position without you having to hold them up, which is beneficial for long shots.

Construction

The construction of the table is very important for both the quality of play and the durability of the table. Almost all tables are made out of either composite, wood or particle board. Though very inexpensive, particle board should be avoided, because it is not very durable. Composite tables do not absorb moisture as much as wood tables, so they will warp less. Check the feet to see if they can be adjusted to level the table if the floor is not perfectly flat.

The playing field should be perfectly level. This can be tested by placing a ball in difference locations on the table. If it begins to roll, the table is not flat. Examine the markings on the field to see if they are laminated into the table or if they are stickers applied onto the surface, which will wear off over time.

Rod Quality

The rods are the most expensive part of the foosball table. The best material for these rods is steel, and the rods can be hollow or solid. Aluminum may be used for a children's table, but it is generally not strong enough to handle the abuse of adults playing. Solid rods are heavier, so they will add more force to your shots but will also put more stress on the other table components because of their weight. Hollow rods have the advantage of being lighter, which speeds up the game. No matter what the rods' composition, check the finishing of the rod to see if it will chip or wear off over time.
