How to Decorate Pedestals

How to Decorate Pedestals

Pedestals are available in many materials, ranging from plaster and wood to marble and granite. You can use pedestals in your home to hold plants, busts, artwork and other decorative items. Or you can use them as subtle room dividers or simply as decoration by themselves. Use your imagination to paint pedestals to match your room's decor using different techniques and finishes. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Sponge-paint your pedestal. Dab a painting sponge into your paint and then lightly dab the sponge onto your pedestal for a textured look. Sponge gold paint along etchings or around the top edge of the pedestal for an elegant look. Allow the paint to dry, and then add a clear gloss as a sealant.

    2

Apply a watered-down paint to achieve a washed look. Latex paint is the ideal paint type for this look, and a one-to-one ratio of water to paint is typically ideal. Using a paintbrush, paint your pedestal with your paint mixture and let dry.

    3

Apply an iridescent gloss to add highlights to your pedestal. Iridescent gloss has a latex base and contains glitter, which creates a subtle glow. Apply it only along your pedestal's etching, or paint a layer over the entire pedestal as lightly or heavily as you prefer. Gold and silver glosses give an elegant glow, though colors like light blue and pink can add a bit of whimsy.
