According to Improvement Direct, "Pedestal sinks were originally constructed from enameled cast iron (just like the stuff cast iron skillets are made from). By 1915, manufacturers began making them from vitreous china, a heavy and somewhat fragile glass-like porcelain." Today, pedestal sinks are reproduced as well as reclaimed. Pedestal sinks do pose the occasional storage problem, or need a cracked or stained base camouflaged. A sink skirt can provide concealed storage and cover any cosmetic blemishes of a pedestal sink. Does this Spark an idea?

How to Make a Pedestal Sink Skirt
- 1
Measure the width of the sink around the sink basin. Double this measurement and use this as the width measurement.
2Measure the drop of the sink. The drop is the measurement from the edge of the sink bowl to the floor. Add 4 inches to this measurement and use this as the length measurement.
3Measure your fabric according to the width-by-length measurements. Make a pattern using your measurements and then cut the fabric, or cut the fabric.
4Sew a - to 1-inch hem on all four edges of the fabric rectangle. There should be no raw edges seen.
5Choose one long side to be "the top" of the sink skirt. Gather this side to the actual measurements of the width around the sink bowl. Leave a 1-inch section of fabric above the gathering line of stitches. Machine or hand gather. To hand gather, insert the needle into the fabric, pulling the needle out of the fabric, and re-inserting it in a continuous line of thread so that when the needle reaches the end of the fabric it can be pulled, tightening, or "gathering" the thread. Measure the thread before beginning to ensure the correct length of thread for a continuous gather.
6Zig-zag stitch the gather to reinforce the stitching.
7Position one of the self-adhesive Velcro strips around the sink bowl where sink skirt placement is desired.
8Place the skirt on a flat surface. Hand sew or glue with glue gun the flat ribbon over the gathering line. Tuck the end under the edges of the skirt and glue or sew.
9Turn the skirt over, wrong side up.
10Adhere the other self-adhesive Velcro strip along the inner side of the gathering line. Press firmly.
11Position the pedestal sink skirt onto the Velcro and press firmly.
